Back pain is a common condition that affects people all around the world. Studies show that women are more likely to experience back pain than men, particularly in the lower back area. Over time, it can hamper daily activities and even lead to sleepless nights.
There are numerous reasons for developing back pain, some of which include hormonal changes, ageing, differences in the pelvic structure and pressure caused on the body by pregnancy and childbirth. However, it can also occur due to a sedentary lifestyle, lack of physical activity or increased stress.
It is important to identify the causes of your pain at an early stage to prevent it from getting severe. We have listed out some common types and causes of back pain to help you better understand your condition.
1. Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a painful condition in women that can also cause back pain over time. The endometrial tissue typically lines the inside of the uterus. Sometimes, a tissue similar to the endometrial tissue grows in areas such as outside of the uterus or in the pelvic cavity. This displaced tissue responds to the body’s hormonal changes and can cause swelling, pain and bleeding.
2. SI Joint Dysfunction
Sacroiliac joint dysfunction is also a condition where pain starts at a different area and eventually radiates to the back. It occurs when the joints move too much or too little and can cause inflammation in the sacroiliac joints that are located at the connection of the pelvis and lower spine. The surface area of the SI joint is usually smaller in women than in men. This results in a greater stress on the joints. The condition can result in lower back or buttock pain, which later spreads to the legs as well.
3. Coccydynia (Tailbone Pain)
Pain at the end of your spine, which is also known as coccyx or tailbone, often occurs due to trauma. Women are more susceptible to this condition because of the differences in the angle and shape of the pelvis and potential injury during childbirth. Coccyx supports your weight when you sit, so any injury to this area can cause pain while sitting down in certain positions. The pain is abruptly relieved when you stand up.
4. Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a condition that weakens the bones in the body and causes them to break from a fall, bump, or in some cases, from sneezing. Women are more likely to develop osteoporosis fractures post menopause due to hormonal changes, which can decrease bone mineral density and predispose bones to fracture. Spinal fractures may cause acute localized back pain, often in the lower and middle area of the back.
