How To Deal With Itchy, Chapped Skin

03/01/2022 Beauty Tips

Itchy or chapped skin is a common skin condition that happens when your skin barrier is compromised. Most occurrences are mild and usually treatable using simple home remedies or topical treatments. However, if the condition persists for long, you may require medical attention.

Several factors can trigger itchy or chapped skin. It can be a result of skin conditions such as dermatitis, hives, eczema, ringworm or allergic reactions. It can also be an indication of dry skin, where body parts like hands, heels and lips may be prone to cracking.

If you are looking for helpful ways to soothe your skin, here are some tips.

  1. Opt For Topical Treatments
Hydration-inducing products are a common way to treat chapped skin. For the face, arms and legs, use over-the-counter moisturizers, such as thick creams or lotions, that can help restore moisture. For dry hands, use petroleum jelly. To treat itchy skin, an anti-itch ointment can be effective as it offers soothing properties.
  2. Make Lifestyle Changes
Most soaps contain perfumes and dyes that can irritate your skin. If you have dry or sensitive skin, opt for unscented soap. Avoid long showers as hard water can also lead to chapped skin. Take short baths, preferably with lukewarm water. Wear clothes made of softer fabrics, such as silk or cotton. Avoid fabrics that feel rough on your skin.
  3. Apply a Liquid Bandage
For severely cracked skin, use a liquid bandage as a protective barrier to keep germs and dirt at bay. Being water-resistant, a liquid bandage also prevents water from seeping into the cracks and causing infections. To apply a liquid bandage, wash your skin and dry it with a towel. Apply the bandage over the affected area and spread it well. After it dries, the liquid will bind the skin together.
  4. Exfoliate Your Skin
GentleĀ exfoliationis highly recommended for cracked or chapped skin as it helps to remove dead cells from the skin’s surface. Exfoliate twice a week for best results. To do so, wash your face and body with water and massage it with a granular scrub in circular motions. Then, use a pumice stone or loofah to gently rub on the skin. Apply a moisturizer when done.
  5. Get Professional Help
If your skin issue gets severe or worsens with time, you may want to seek professional help. A skin specialist can examine your skin, identify the root of the problem and provide you with the right tools, solutions and treatments. This will help you to not only treat your skin but also keep the problems at bay after the treatment.
