How To Determine Your Skin Type

An effective skincare routine is important to help keep your skin looking its best. However, figuring out your true skin type can be challenging as your skin’s needs change over time. Each skin is different and learning what works for your unique skin can help you understand the most ideal options to achieve a healthier and flawless complexion.

What are the Different Skin Types?

Criteria such as genetics, sensitivity level, hydration, elasticity, and skin tone are considered when determining skin types. Based on such factors, skin types can be broadly classified as follows:

  1. Normal Skin
Normal skin is neither too oily nor too dry. It has an even texture and a clean appearance with no significant imperfections.
  2. Sensitive Skin
Sensitive skin is delicate and easily reacts to chemicals. It is often prone to irritations such as tightness, redness, itching as well as allergic reactions. Sensitive skin usually requires special attention to manage such conditions.
  3. Dry Skin
Dry skin feels tight and rough and usually appears dull. It is typically a result of genetics, poor lifestyle, hormonal changes or climatic conditions. Dehydration is also a prominent cause of dry skin.
  4. Combination Skin
People with combination skin tend to experience dryness on the cheeks but greasiness on the t-zone (forehead, nose and chin areas). It is usually a result of genetics but using the wrong products may also trigger combination skin and sometimes worsen it.
  5. Oily Skin
Oily skin occurs when the sebaceous glands in the skin make sebum in excess. Factors that influence oily skin include stress, humidity, genetics, and fluctuating hormones. While people with this skin type benefit from the natural moisture, oftentimes, it can also leave pores congested and clogged.

How to Determine Your Skin Type?

The easiest way to test your skin is to see how it performs on a typical day from morning through evening.

01. The Bare-Faced Method
For this method, wash your face using a cleanser and examine it after half an hour. If your face feels parched, you most likely have dry skin. If your forehead, nose and cheeks feel greasy, you have oily skin. Whereas, if only the forehead and nose appear greasy, but your cheeks feel dry, you have combination skin.

2. The Blotting Sheet Method
For this method, pat a sheet on different parts of your face. Then, hold it up to see how much oil is noticeable. If the sheet has absorbed little or no oil, you have dry skin. If it has absorbed oil from the t-zone, you have combination skin. If the sheet is soaked in oil, your skin type is oily.
